"Most people are dead. Did you know that? It’s true, out of all the people that ever were, almost all of them are dead. There are way more dead people, and you’re all going to die. And then you’re going to be dead for way longer than you’re alive, like, that’s mostly what you’re ever going to be… You’re just dead people that didn’t die yet. ” - Louis C.K.
I’m a bit of a weirdo, I guess, so when everyone started pulling out the pastel eggs and bunnyrabbit chocolates and baby hummingbird cams, my thoughts turned to impermanence and death, and how nothing ever really dies, but everything’s dying all the time, pretty much from the moment we come into form. As Ming used to love reminding people: the number one cause of death is birth.
It’s not a mystery why so many celebrations and rituals around the world at the Spring equinox include stories and myths of rebirth or rising again from the dead - that living things can dry up and go into a coma through the Winter only to come back in Spring to multiply themselves as tiny hairy things and colorful smelly things and lots of sting-y things that help those smelly things turn into seed carrying things is a bit of a miracle.
But I’m thinking maybe nature’s assertion of life at this time of year is a little… too exuberant. Y’know? If it were so sure of the fact of living, it wouldn’t have to show off so much, right? I mean, it’s sure trying really hard to call attention to itself.
So I drew that picture at the top on Easter Sunday, lol.
And these are just some doodlings. Excuse the darkness - I still need to adjust some scanner settings so colors come out right and I haven't had the time!
Speaking of Easter Sunday – my sister told me she went to give mass another chance yesterday and ran screaming at around, well, the beginning, because it started with "I confess to almighty god...that I have sinned in my thought and in my word in what I have done and what I have failed to do..."
She wrote me, and I quote, “AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. what a way to be told you suck over and over again!!!! I have SINNED and I have FAILED”
Yes, Avielle, and also there’s the sin and dying on the cross for your sins and SINNING. AND DON'T FORGET THE SIN!!!!
You know what original sin is?
It’s not a coffee stain on your pure white soul you need to bleach out with self-flagellation and confessing you watched Cinemax After Dark that one night.
It’s just a misunderstanding. It’s the misunderstanding of your origin. It’s the belief that starts coagulating soon after you’re born and gels somewhere around the time you can recognize your form in a mirror, that your memory, your personality, your body, your emotions, your thoughts – all this stuff *about* you – all these things are what you are.
But you're much less than that.
